EAST BAY SPCA: GROWL, MEOW AND WINE

The image features text in a playful font that reads Growl, Meow & Wine, with the word Growl in large uppercase letters and Meow & Wine in smaller, lowercase letters. The text is in a dark blue color.

Poster featuring a stylized illustration of a dog with a mohawk, wearing sunglasses and sitting. It promotes Paws for Pizza with Zacharys Chicago Pizza and East Bay SPCA logos, with a bold red heart and website at the bottom. Every year, the East Bay SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) hosts a major fundraising event, “Growl, Meow & Wine”. This year, Zachary’s sponsored at the “Cat’s Meow” level and we got to send seven very lucky employee owners (and one even luckier Zachary’s spouse!) to the event. From the EBSPCA website, “The East Bay SPCA is committed to the welfare of cats and dogs in the communities we serve. We strive to eliminate animal cruelty, neglect and overpopulation by providing programs and education that support people and companion animals.”  Check out their site!

The event started with a silent auction and was soon followed by an energetic and exciting live auction. Our employee owners rocked the silent auction walking A group of seven people at an indoor social event, standing and smiling for a photo. The venue is decorated with colorful paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Tables around them are set for dining with glasses and plates.away with a huge gift basket of doggie treats and toys, a visit to a Healdsburg winery and some Giants tickets! Zachary’s VP, Leandra Schuler, was particularly fortunate; she walked away with two Southwest airline tickets in a nail-biting raffle!

Despite all of the fun and success that the humans enjoyed, the big winners of the day were the animals who benefit from all of the amazing services the EBSPCA offers. We were very proud to be a part of a such a fantastic event! An open program on a table with a mug and water bottle. The left page lists event schedules, featuring a kitten photo. YOGA AT ZACHARY’S

A group of people practicing yoga indoors, standing in the tree pose on yoga mats. They are smiling, balancing on one leg, with hands in prayer position. The room has bright lights and artwork on the walls.Big news! The first ever Zachary’s yoga class took place on Thursday, January 5th and it was AMAZING!

Zachary’s is an employee owned company (read more here: https://zacharys.com/about-us/our-people/) via our ESOP. We have a committee of dedicated employee owners who work to educate the crew about the ESOP itself and the benefits and responsibilities of being an employee owner. This year, the ESOP Committee decided to focus their efforts on a theme: Fit and Clean 2017. To kick off the year, Zachary’s hosted a yoga class, right here at our College Avenue location in Oakland, CA.

The fantastic and fun, Molly Pearson, agreed to lead the way. Amidst the cacophony that is an early morning at Zachary’s (think drilling, hammering, an industrial grater slicing major amounts of mozzarella, trucks delivering loads of produce, flour, pizza boxes and more, the whirring of the Hobart, the playful banter of the morning crew… you get the picture), a brave bunch of employee owners donned their yoga gear and stretched and twisted and Warriored together.

Though peaceful it was not, the morning was certainly full of beauty and joy. Yoga, pizza and some pretty fabulous employee owners made for a special start to another day at Zachary’s.

CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS AT ZACHARY’S

Two men indoors, one with a beard and a thoughtful pose wearing a dark sweater, the other smiling in a red suit. Theyre standing close together with festive string lights and windows in the background. We have a pretty amazing crew. We’ve got folks who have been with the company since 1983 and folks who just started last week. We have stunningly fast pizza makers and exceptionally warm and welcoming hosts and servers. These amazing folks thrive in a chaotic and sometimes downright wild environment. No one, in our humble opinion, deserves a more fantastic holiday party than these truly fabulous employee owners.

We celebrated in style at the Lake Chalet in downtown Oakland. A group of seven people, mostly women, are smiling and standing close together at a social event. They are indoors, holding drinks, and dressed in casual to semi-formal attire. The background has dim lighting with festive decorations.A man and woman smiling at a holiday party. We kicked off the month by sending two of our fantastic employee owners, Katie Leary and Tabitha King to the ESOP Association Conference in Tahoe.

Tabitha and Katie came back from the conference filled with ideas and employee-owner enthusiasm. Here are some of their highlights from the conference:

  • Being around people who were super enthusiastic about engaging their employees and fostering the ownership mindset
  • Learning more about how an ESOP can benefit the company and individual employees
  • Getting lots of ideas for fun ESOP events and ways to engage employees in what it means to be an employee owner
  • Seeing other companies’ displays of how they celebrate their employees
  • Nerding out with fellow SF bay area ESOP members like Recology
  • Playing beginner’s poker and not knowing how to bluff
  • Getting a glowing review of Zachary’s pizza from Jackson Hardware CEO and ESOP Conference president Matthew Olson

Warm lighting and casual attire suggest a social or networking event. As you can see, Tabitha and Katie stayed busy, learned a lot and had some fun. We are so excited that they were able to attend the conference and come back with so much to share!
