BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH: QUIA’S STORY

This October, Zachary’s is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer has touched the lives of many of our crew members, one of whom is Quia White. Quia has been a dedicated Zachary’s employee-owner for over 10 years. She is a true inspiration.

A person wearing a pink T-shirt with a breast cancer awareness ribbon logo stands smiling in a restaurant with red walls and artwork. They have short hair and are wearing a floral-patterned skirt. Tables with plates and condiments are in the background.Hello my name is Quia White, I fought Breast Cancer, and won. Here’s my story:

At age 24 I discovered a lump on my breast. I was scared beyond belief and immediately called the 24hr nurse hotline. The nurse calmly told me to relax, to check my breast two weeks later, and if the lump was still there to contact my doctor. I desperately wanted the lump to disappear, and for some reason it never occurred to me that this could be breast cancer. So I contacted my doctor and we were all in agreement, there was a lump, and something should be done. My first ultra sound shockingly came back negative for any abnormal growth, and I remember being happy in an uncomfortable way.

I thought to myself, the lump is there, this doesn’t make sense. I wasn’t quite sure what action to take next. My family was happy and content with the negative results, I however still had the burden of this lump on my body, and was not content with the results. So I waited as long as I could. Eight months later I went back to my doctor,  went through the same exact process as before, except this time I received a diagnosis of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ—noninvasive breast cancer. I went from scared beyond belief into complete melt down mode, I was in utter disbelief. After the smoke cleared and the dust settled, I came to terms with my reality: 1) mastectomy, and 2) four months of chemotherapy! Life has been forever altered by my scrimmage with breast cancer. The one thing I learned is you have to fight for yourself, because no one else can or will.  I am happy to be 5 years cancer free, and look forward to another 5 years!

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month which reminds me that having breast cancer does not have to be a solo endeavor. With the support of family, friends, doctors, and various other groups the plight of having breast cancer can be alleviated drastically.  Many organizations are dedicated to research and finding the underlying root cause of breast cancer, which is no small task. There are some major strides being made in breast cancer research that should be acknowledged and applauded. However, let us not forget the many women who have lost their fight against this disease, and who did not reap the rewards of modern day advances. As a society we can continue this scientific progressiveness, which could one day cure all cancers!Woman wearing a bright pink Zacharys Chicago Pizza t-shirt, smiling and looking over her shoulder, stands in a restaurant with red and white walls adorned with pizza-themed posters.

Please help Zachary’s support breast cancer research and awareness. During October, we are selling pink Zachary’s t-shirts and baseball caps. These item are available at all four locations and on our website: https://zacharys.com/gifts-swag/

All profits from the sales will go to the American Cancer Society.

MEET A ZACHARY’S ARTIST: ZAK WILSON

A person taking a selfie in a mirror with a digital camera. The flash is visible, and there are light spots on the mirror. The person has short hair and is wearing a dark top.The walls of our restaurants are filled with one-of-a-kind Zachary’s Pizza Art. We held our first art contest in the late 1980′s and the tradition has continued every couple of years to this day. We love our art and the artists! Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Zak Wilson.

“I’m a big fan of pop art and wanted to create something in that style. The Roy Lichtenstein look fit the vibe of the idea. That and I wanted to win some free pizza. (The first time I ate Zachary’s) had to be in the mid 80’s sometime. A good friend worked at the Solano store so I was turned on to Zachary’s Pizza early in the game. That same friend is now one of the owners.Pop art style image of a woman and man about to kiss. Speech bubble from the man reads, I think Im falling in love! Zacharys Chicago Pizza is written in the top left corner.

I’m a native of Berkeley and have been in the Bay Area my whole life. Aside from the cost of living, what’s not to like about the Bay Area? All my immediate family is here. Good weather, culture, sports, food (hint, hint…). It’s one of many amazing places in the country…but this one happens to be home.”

MEET A ZACHARY’S ARTIST: KATIA NOVAK

A person with long reddish-brown hair and a black top smiles at the camera. The lighting is bright from the background, creating a soft glow around them. They are wearing a necklace and the room appears softly lit.The walls of our restaurants are filled with one-of-a-kind Zachary’s Pizza Art. We held our first art contest in the late 1980′s and the tradition has continued every couple of years to this day. We love our art and the artists. Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Katia Novak.

“I grew up at Zachary’s Pizza. It was the first solid food I ever had as a baby, and it is an unspoken tradition in my family to go at least once a month. Since Zachary’s had always had a special place in my heart, I thought I’d endear myself in return by contributing some of what I’m best at—art. I drew inspiration for my poster from my love of the sea and my childhood obsession with mermaids and magical things. I still respect my painting for what it taught me in terms of shadow and scale, but since its creation I’ve evolved. I’d like to showcase my new skills in another painting for Zach’s sometime in the near future.”

Katia’s art entry to the Zachary’s Art Contest in 2011 also placed her as one of three winners of the highly competitive Zachary’s Young Artist Award. Zachary’s donated $1500 to College Park High School’s art department, where she attended and grew as an artist.

MEET A ZACHARY’S PIZZA ARTIST: EVA JAEGER

A person with long, brown hair tied up, smiling while sitting in front of a wooden fence. They are wearing a white sleeveless top and hoop earrings. There is a branch with leaves partially visible on the right. The walls of our restaurants are filled with one-of-a-kind Zachary’s Pizza Art. We held our first art contest in the late 1980’s and the tradition has continued every couple of years to this day. We love our art and the artists. Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Eva Jaeger.

“When I created this piece my family had moved from Berkeley to Manhattan for a year. When I look at this piece now it conjures up all the emotions of those moments: a longing for home and familiar things like Zachary’s, the excitement and adventure of being somewhere unknown and the joy of knowing that I’d be back to have some pizza soon. And of course, I was 4 and loved Princesses!

My inspiration for this piece was all the things I loved.  Princesses, pink, big art and pizza. I actually didn’t really like Young girl in pink pajamas sitting on a wooden floor next to a colorful drawing. The drawing features a person with a crown, purple top, and pizza slice. Art supplies are spread around. The text on the paper mentions pizza and love.Pepperoni (truth be known) but the alliteration was too good to pass up!  The process I used for this piece was to draw it on a smaller piece of paper and then spread out on the floor, with all my markers tossed around, and the paper taped down.  Shoes off and spread across the whole thing I sketched by pencil and then dried out just about every marker pen filling in the spaces.  My brother, who was in 1st grade at the time, was also drawing next to me.  His poster actually was awarded an Honorable Mention and I was happy to be creating our pieces together.

This may be the peak of my artistic recognition.  Since that time the pieces I’ve created are much smaller and much more private, rarely venturing into public space.  I like to express my creativity in crafts, writing, on the stage and on the soccer field.  And my love A childs drawing with a princess wearing a green crown, holding a pepperoni pizza slice. Text reads: Zacharys pizza I love you, I love you!!! Princesses love pepperoni pizza! Signed Eva Joseph, Age 4.for Princesses and pizza have also become a bit more subdued as I pursue higher ambitions than just being royalty. The thing I haven’t changed since then is a love for Zachary’s pizza.  Just finished one a minute ago!” – Eva

MEET A ZACHARY’S PIZZA ARTIST: IAN RANSLEY

The walls of our restaurants are filled with one-of-a-kind Zachary’s Pizza Art. We held our first art contest in the late 1980’s and the tradition has continued every couple of years to this day. We love our art and the artists. Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Ian Ransley.

Stylized poster of a dog wearing sunglasses with a pizza theme. The text reads PAWS FOR PIZZA and lists locations: Oakland, Berkeley, San Ramon, Pleasant Hill. Background features a red circle, and the dog wears a red collar.

Ian Ransley is a single father of two Zachary’s-loving boys. Ian is a Berkeley native and a professional graphic designer. He splits his time designing Zachary’s posters and designing for professional sports teams and events including the NHL Winter Classic and the NFL Super Bowl among many other events. He is a dual-citizen of the U.S. and Great Britain. Growing up in a British home he never had pizza so Ian can’t get enough of it now. Ian annoys his two sons using them time and again in many of his art projects. In Ian’s past life he has swam from Alcatraz twice, finished an Ironman triathlon and parachuted out of an airplane thinking it would cure his fear of heights (it didn’t). Ian’s first job was a gas station attendant. Ian’s 15-year old son can’t believe a gas station attendant was ever a real job. You can check out some of Ian’s work and more of Zachary’s posters at https://www.berkeleygraphicdesign.com/ .
